Our 2008 Event
Schedule
May 10th
Volunteer Opportunity - Cemetery
Documentation -
Locust Grove Cemetery, Elmwood Avenue in Providence
Rhode Island. The Obscure Company officers will be
joining with the
Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission to aid
them in documenting the gravestones at the Locust Grove
Cemetery. It is their hope "to formulate and
develop plans and programs to restore, rehabilitate and
maintain historical cemeteries and locate sources of
funds such as grants and individual or corporate
sponsors".
Our hope is to provide any support to organizations
in Rhode Island that are improving the conditions of the
area. This is a
continuation of our efforts to provide volunteers
from our network to organizations in Rhode Island.
Hopefully there will be more opportunities posted as
they are identified. Contact
John Colwell to let us know you are coming! We will
arrive at 9:30 am and stay as long as you are able.

Golf Outing - For the past few years we
have held a golf outing at
Fairlawn Golf Course
in Lincoln Rhode Island. With increasing interest
in the event we are going to expand it to have a
shot-gun start, more participants and raise some money
for charity!
September 6th
Sit A Thon - The signature Obscure Company
Event continues. Every year The Obscure Company
organizes a Sit A Thon (similar to a walk a thon, with
more focus on couches...) to raise money for the
American Cancer Society's Camp Hope (a camp for children
and their siblings with cancer). Over the years
The Obscure Company has raised over $18000.00 for these
organizations, and in 2007 was able to give its largest
donation to date of $5,500.00. This is a wonderful
cause and Obscure Company officers and board members are
considering volunteering their time as councilors this
year as well as their efforts to make the Sit A Thon a
success.
December 13th
End of the Year Banquet - Each year
we take a night to reflect on our accomplishments for
the year and recognize those who have made it
possible. It is always a fun time, and provides an
opportunity for Obscure Company enthusiasts to network
and meet the others who make the company a success.
December 26th
Boxing Day - This year The Obscure
Company will attempt to import the Canadian holiday of
Boxing Day. Each year in the privileged society we
live in we receive gifts that we believe could find
better use with other people. We will be
organizing a gift pick up - and arranging for these
appreciated, yet un-needed, gifts to make their way to
someone who could better benefit from them.

THE SMITHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE FAIR - February 4, 2006
On
February 4th 2006, six dedicated Obscure Company staffers attended the
Smithfield High School Science fair to judge their extensive and eclectic
research projects. At 8:30 sharp we were handed a packet of information
outlining the pertinent topics and we were let loose among the students coffee
and donut in hand. Nearly all the
students involved did a superlative job with their projects in both appearance
and presentation teaching all of us a little bit about spiders, soil, lead
poisoning, forest fires and not to underestimate the youth of Rhode Island.
